As of Friday, May 09, 2008, this site is home to 3,195,963 web pages describing 1,363,971 plants, 1,473,085 animals, 13,045 Bacteria, 20,258 Chromista, 284,470 Fungi, and 17,268 Protozoa. The database from which we generate all of this contains 9.2 gigabytes* of primary data. Pages contain 257,414 photos taken by 1,364 photographers, 1,104 sound recordings, and definitions of 45,203 terms, plus 69,493 large photos (128.4 gigabytes) that can be zoomed and panned.
Altogether we have about 000.0 gigabytes, or 214659518503 bytes, of source data, photos and maps, not counting the pages themselves.
We have also created 208,265 pages with text, photos, and maps for taxonomic groups from Domain down to Genus. Finding all of this can be fast, because about 3 million pages are indexed for soundex searches.
We have gathered a total of 54,827,292 field observations from 28,481 data sets and 1,547 data providers which show latitude and longitude, from which we have generated 240,003 State Maps, 744,777 Country Maps, 169,583 Google maps showing up to 200 sightings each, and 60,607 Google Earth maps showing all sightings.
