Habitat

Vegetation: montaine evergreen forests, tropical deciduous forests, tropical lowland evergreen forest, pine forests • Minimum Elevation: 1,000 meters • Maximum Elevation: 2,200 meters • Zoogeographic Region: Hispaniola • Foraging Strata: Understory/undergrowth • Center of Abundance: Upper tropical: higher slopes, 900-1,600 m.; tropics. • Sensitivity to Disturbancet: Medium

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 2,382 meters (0 to 7,815 feet).[1]

Biome: Terrestrial

Ecology: It is largely terrestrial in broadleaf forest and dense thickets, especially in ravines and near water, but inhabits semi-arid scrub on Gonâve Island. It is primarily a montane species, occurring above 1,000 m , but locally to 800 m (e.g. at Las Mercedes2). However, the races abbotti and frugivorus occur(red) in areas below 600 m. Breeding probably occurs in May-July4. It feeds chiefly on invertebrates , rather than fruit as implied by its specific name.[2]
