Family Centriscidae

Distribution: Indo-Pacific . Body extremely compressed , razorlike body with a sharp entral edge . Thin bony plates which are expansions of the vertebral column almost entirely cover the body. First dorsal spine long and sharp, located at the extreme end of the body; 2 shorter spines follow it. Dorsal and caudal soft fins are displaced ventrally. Lateral line absent. No teeth. Swims in vertical position with the snout downwards; feeds on small zooplankton . Maximum length up to 15 cm.The family Centriscidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Syngnathiformes. It contains 5 genera and 15 species. It may be found in Marine environments and is primarily Marine. Some members of this family are used in the aquarium trade. Reproductively, most members of this family are nonguarders. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is balistiform. Compared with other fish, the activity level of this family tends to be sluggish. Members of this family have been dated back to the lower Eocene epoch of the Tertiary period. Etymology of this family name : Greek, kentriskos, -ou, a kind of fish without identification

Habitat

Inhabits sandy or muddy floors of shallow inlet waters. Usually in large schools among branching corals , seawhip gardens and black coral bushes to about 15 m depth. Small juveniles in surface waters and sometimes in small groups along beach edges in quite bays and settle with crinoids or urchins (Ref. 48635). May be found at depths of 3 to 100 meters.

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 867 meters (0 to 2,844 feet).Mean = -25.840 meters (-84.777 feet), Standard Deviation = 57.380 based on 502 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.

Biome: Brackish water, saltwater . Reef-associated .
