Description
Physical Description
Species Cyanea capillata
Bell up to 2 m in diameter in high-latitudes; southern specimens usually closer to 50 cm. Bell has a thick center and a thinner margin . Margin divided into 8 thick lobes , with 8 clusters of up to 150 tentacles arranged in several rows , arising from horseshoe shaped regions between the lobes; with 8 rhopalia. Oral arms short and highly folded, forming a blocky mass only about as long as the bell is wide. Color deep brick red to purplish, yellowish-brown in small specimens. The swimming medusa looks like an 8 pointed star at the end of its power stroke.

Typically found in the intertidal zone at the water's edge at a mean distance from sea level of -23 meters (-75 feet).Standard Deviation = 392.650 based on 254 observations. Terrestrial altitude and ocean depth information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.

Probably lives less than one year, commonly seen in summer. Has an unpleasant sting that lasts about 4-5 hours.
