Description
Family Fringillidae
A Family of seed-eating, small to moderately large passerine birds that have strong , stubby beaks, which in some species can be quite large. They have a bouncing flight, alternating flapping with gliding on closed wings. Most sing well.
Physical Description
Adult Female: Head : pale orange-ochre on sides, dark gray-olive above Face : Eyebrow Line : pale orange-ochre Neck: Throat : pale orange to ochre Body: Breast: pale orange to ochre near top, whit with black streaks below Flanks: white with black streaks Sides: white with black streaks Underparts: white with black streaks Upperparts: dark gray-olive.Adult Male: Head: brilliant orange Crown: brilliant orange between black sides Ear Coverts: black triangular patch Neck: Nape: black Throat: brilliant orange Body: Back: black with white streaks Belly: buff-white Breast: brilliant orange near top, white with pale ochre wash below Flanks: buff-white Sides: buff white with black streaks Tail: black with white patches on outer feathers Undertail Coverts: buff-white.
Size/Age/Growth
About 5 inches long, with a wingspan of 8 to 8 inches. Adults weigh about 0.4 ounces .
Habitat
Found chiefly in low second-growth woods .
Vegetation: montaine evergreen forests, tropical lowland evergreen forest, second-growth forests and woodlands • Minimum Elevation: 900 meters • Maximum Elevation: 3,100 meters • Sensitivity to Disturbancet: Medium
