Family Diplomystidae

Diplomystid catfishes occur in southern South America, Chile and Argentina. Maxilla well developed. Teeth on maxilla. Lagenar otolith equal in size to or larger than the utricular otolith. Barbels present on maxilla. Dorsal fin with spine and 6-7 soft rays ; anal fin with 9-12 principal rays; adipose fin present; pectoral fins with spine; caudal fin with 18 principal rays. Maximum length 28 cm.The family Diplomystidae belongs to the Class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes ) and the Order Siluriformes. It contains 2 genera and 5 species. It may be found in Freshwater environments and is primarily Primary freshwater. Members of this family are not used in the aquarium trade. The main mode of swimming of adult fish in this family is subcarangiform. This family may be found from 31° n to 45° s and 73° w to 60° e. Etymology of this family name : Greek, diploos = double + Greek, mys = músculo
