Family Fringillidae

A Family of seed-eating, small to moderately large passerine birds that have strong , stubby beaks , which in some species can be quite large. They have a bouncing flight, alternating flapping with gliding on closed wings. Most sing well.

Habitat

Vegetation: tropical lowland evergreen forest, pine forests, tropical lowland evergreen forest, pine-oak forests • Maximum Elevation: 1,300 meters • Zoogeographic Region: Baja California • Foraging Strata: Terrestrial • Center of Abundance: Lower subtropical: lowlands, lower than 500 m.; subtropics. • Sensitivity to Disturbancet: Medium

Biome: Terrestrial

Ecology: It is found mainly in remnant stands of cypress Cupressus guadalupensis, but has been observed feeding at the base of pines Pinus radiata var. binata and oaks Quercus tomentella. A few pairs now occupy Nicotiana glauca scrub on the beach , suggesting a relatively high level of adaptability . The nest is constructed in a depression on the ground or in the low branches of a tree2. The breeding season is February-June, when 3-4 eggs are laid2.[1]
