Family Anatidae

Birds that are modified for swimming, floating on the water surface, and in some cases diving in at least shallow water. They have webbed feet and flattened bills. Special oils in their feathers helps them shed water. This is one of the few families of birds that possess a penis .

Physical Description

Adult Female: Head : chocolate or chestnut Face : Cheeks: white Chin: white Neck: Hindneck: chocolate or chestnut Throat : white Body: Upperparts: grayish.Adult Male: Head: Crest : white Face: Eyeline: black eye patch.

Size/Age/Growth

About 14 to 16 inches long, with a wingspan of 24 to 26 inches. Adults weigh about 22.4 ounces .

Habitat

Typically found in the intertidal zone at the water's edge at a mean distance from sea level of 40 meters (132 feet).Standard Deviation = 587.710 based on 311 observations. Terrestrial altitude and ocean depth information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
