Overview
Scarcely distinguishable from C. annuum L., an herb or small shrub from tropical America where it has been cultivated for 4,000 years. The ornamental peppers, tobasco, paprika, cayenne, and bell peppers are all varieties of this latter, highly variable species which is also found in cultivation in Hawaii. The fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C and are often used medicinally in the tropics.
