Plants of Special Concern
About this Page
- Special Concern is a conservation classification that designates a species that is not yet
threatened but may be in the near future either because there are so few of them or their habitat is
threatened. Such a species may become a threatened or an endangered species because of a combination of
biological characteristics and identified threats. Some species are of Special Concern because they are
particularly susceptible to over-exploitation or environmental change. Many of these Plants are in areas
that are experiencing rapid environmental change because of activities such as urbanization, land clearance,
or dams. Plants of Special Concern are usually covered by state laws.
