Genus Barbeyella

Ultrastructure of Barbeyella minutissima (Myxomycetes)' Karstenia 40:159-166","Minute stipitate globose sporocarps . Peridium granulate , dehiscing into petaloid lobes . Columella rising to the centre. Capillitium simple or sparingly forked with one or two tips attached to each peridial platelet . Monotypic.

Physical Description

Species Barbeyella minutissima

Sporocarps scattered , total height 0.2-0.25(-0.4) mm. Sporotheca purple-brown or blackish, ± globose , flattened at the base , c. 0.1-0.13(-0.2) mm diam. Stalk c. 66% of total height, reddish brown and transparent at the base, black and opaque at the apex, tubular , stuffed near the base with refuse matter, tapered upwards. Hypothallus absent. Peridium thick, dull to slightly iridescent , covered on both surfaces with refuse matter, divided into 5-9 distinct , angular platelets , firmly attached to the apices of the capillitium . Dehiscence along preformed lines , the platelets margins with irregular blunt spines c. 2 µm high. Columella tapered, up to c. 33% the height of the sporotheca. Capillitium consisting of 6-10 primary branches arising from the columella apex, threads simple , occasionally reddish brown, once-branched, the tips firmly attached to the peridium by flared, funnel-shaped expansions. Spore-mass purple-brown. Spores smoky brown, distinctly warted, 8-10 µm diam. On leafy liverworts.

Habitat

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 1,735 meters (0 to 5,692 feet).Mean = 870.750 meters (2,856.791 feet), Standard Deviation = 503.420 based on 55 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
