Description
Genus Calonema
Sporocarps either stalked or sessile and then often crowded or heaped. Capillitium of branching tubules which form a network and which may be attached to the base and peridium. Capillitium vaguely decorated with reticulations , irregular rings and/or spirals .
Physical Description
Species Calonema foliicola
Sporocarps scattered on the underside of dead Quercus leaves, stalked, 0.5-(1.0)-1.4 mm in total height . Sporotheca subglobose, 0.3-0.6 mm diam., to ovoid or broadly elliptical , 0.3-0.9 x 0.2-0.7 mm, occasionally slightly elongated, red to light red occasionally yellowish-red to reddish-brown or pinkish, fading to yellowish when old. Hypothallus colourless to dark reddish-brown, bright, yellowish red by TL , membranous, discoid . Stipe cylindrical, slightly expanded toward the base , erect , 0.2-0.8 x 0.04-0.14 mm, minutely striate , translucent , dark reddish brown to dusky red or red, occasionally brown to yellow, yellow by TL, yellow to light red toward the base, filled with subglobose cysts 7.9-(11.8)-19.7 µm diam. Peridium single, membranous, partially evanescent , remaining as a shallow calyculus, translucent, radially plicate , pale yellow to yellow by TL, the inner surface ornamented with 0.5 µm broad veins, forming a reticulum of isodiametric or elongated mesh, 0.5-5.0 µm diam. by SEM, occasionally remaining as small fragments attached to the top of the sporotheca. Dehiscence irregular and slightly circumscissile. Columella absent. Capillitium of tubular threads, elastic, not or slightly expanded, pale yellow to yellow by TL, the threads 2.4-4.7 µm diam., flexuous , branched and anastomosed, with few free ends, entangled, attached to the calyculus, decorated with smooth , subparallel, faint, irregular veins, usually branched and anastomosed in a reticulate pattern , occasionally resembling spirals or half rings , by SEM this reticulate venation is continuous with the peridial inner surface at the base of the sporotheca. Spore-mass reddish. Spores free, pale yellow to very pale brown, subglobose, 8.0-10.5 µm diam., verrucose , the warts dispersed and irregularly distributed, baculate by SEM, the bacula up to 0.6 µm height, sometimes fused and forming small crestae, occasionally with smaller warts, up to 0.15 µm height between the bacula. Plasmodium not observed. = Hemitrichia foliicola
