Genus Echinostelium

Small stipitate sporocarps , up to 0.5 mm tall. Spore-mass colourless, pale Emoto 1977 The Myxomycetes of Japan Sangyo Tosho, Tokyo.llow, ochre or pink. Capillitium , if present, not dichotomous. Almost all spp. are corticolous .

Physical Description

Species Echinostelium cribrarioides

Sporocarps 250-500 µm tall. Stalk 125-350 µm long, tapered upwards from an expanded base , usually stuffed with granular debris along its entire length, 5-12 µm diam. at the apex. Sporotheca 60-120 µm diam., cream to golden yellow. Columella 4-25 µm tall and 4-8 µm diam. in the type, absent in later gatherings. Capillitium branched and anastomosed to form a rigid , globose net with few free ends, the threads up to 2 µm diam. Peridium usually remaining as a membranous collar at the base of the sporotheca, the collar 6-15 µm diam. Spore-mass cream to yellow. Spores yellow to hyaline , globose, 8-10 µm diam., minutely roughened and bearing numerous raised pads . Has been confused with Clastoderma pachypus and with forms of E. minutum where some degree of capillitial anastomosing is present. The form illustrated here lacks the short columella that is present in the type.

Habitat

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 1,107 meters (0 to 3,632 feet).Mean = 264.270 meters (867.028 feet), Standard Deviation = 380.070 based on 22 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
