Genus Macbrideola

Sporocarps small, stipitate , globose to ovate . Stalk translucent , hollow (trapped air is often seen in liquid mounts ). Columella usually present. Peridium fugaceous or persistent . Capillitium present or absent.

Physical Description

Species Macbrideola cornea

Sporocarps scattered or grouped, 0.3-2.0 mm tall. Hypothallus discoid , small, red-brown or yellow. Stalk red-brown or sometimes yellow at the base , keratinoid, homogenous , not fibrous , distinctly hollow, tapering upwards and becoming darker, 50-70% of the total height . Sporotheca spherical , 0.05-0.3 mm diam., dark brown. Peridium partly persistent as a collar around the stalk apex. Columella reaching to c. the centre of the sporotheca. Capillitium dark brown, branched dichotomously, usually only 1-3 times, tapered outwards but remaining fairly stout at the periphery. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores lilac-brown or grey-brown, verrucose , 8-9 µm diam.

Habitat

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 1,810 meters (0 to 5,938 feet).Mean = 680.030 meters (2,231.070 feet), Standard Deviation = 616.230 based on 328 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
