Physical Description

Species Wiesnerella auriculata

Plasmodium yellow, orange or scarlet. Primarily plasmodiocarpous, 0.3-0.5 mm diam., sometimes broken into pulvinate sporocarps , sessile. Peridium hyaline , pale yellow to red or dark reddish brown, often encrusted with white, orange or red lime globules , the lime sometimes densely aggregated as an outer peridial wall, the colour varying from deep maroon to white with red spots, transversely rugulose , closely attached to the substratum . Capillitium duplex, consisting of flat, angular, limy nodes massed into transverse plates which divide the interior into incomplete segments, and a delicate network of yellowish tubules bearing a few rounded calcareous nodes and numerous spiny , often uncinate , branches. Spore-mass black. Spores violaceous brown, minutely roughened, (7-)8-10(-11) µm diam. Specimens developed in moist-chamber culture of bark are ± sporocarpous or short-plasmodiocarpous.

Habitat

Typically found at an altitude of 0 to 2,250 meters (0 to 7,382 feet).Mean = 447.450 meters (1,468.012 feet), Standard Deviation = 784.170 based on 40 observations. Altitude information for each observation from British Oceanographic Data Centre.
