Islands of the western Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines, widely scattered between 1° N and 21° N and 131° E and 177° E; a subdivision of Oceania. Includes the Mariana, the Palau, Caroline, Marshall, and Gilbert Islands. Political divisions: Kiribati, Tuvalu, Guam, Nauru, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The Federal States of Micronesia comprise the islands of Yap, Ponape, Truk, and Kusaie.
