Distribution: New Guinea and adjacent islands, northern and eastern Australia, and parts of eastern Indonesia. Brackish and freshwater, rarely in marine water. Similar to the rainbowfishes, except for the following features: mesethmoid absent; infraorbital series with only anterior member present (the kachrymal); articular bone as high as dentary bone.
