(Gr. agarikon: agaric, a kind of mushroom) A fungus belonging to a large worldwide order (Agaricales). The group includes many edible mushrooms, such as the white mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) and field mushroom (A. campestris), as well as the poisonous death cap (see Amanita). The visible part of the fungus consists of a stipe (stalk) bearing a cap with gills on the undersurface. Phylum: Basidiomycota.
