(Gr. apo: away; physis: production) (pl. apophyses) A projection or protuberance; that portion of a cone scale that is exposed when the cone is closed; a strongly differentiated, sterile neck at the base of a capsule, between seta and urn, e.g. Trematodon, Polytrichum, Splachnum. Cf. hypophysis, neck.
