(L. caruncula: small bit of flesh) A small outgrowth from the testa of a seed that develops from the placenta, funicle, or micropyle. Examples include the warty outgrowth from the castor-oil seed and the tuft of hairs on the testa of the seed of willowherb. See also aril. Syn. strophiole.
