(Gr. karyon: a nut; opsis: appearance) A dry single-seeded indehiscent fruit that differs from an achene in that the fruit wall is fused to the testa of the seed; the seed adheres to the thin pericarp, so that the fruit and seed are incorporated into one body. It is the grain of cereals and grasses.
