central strand

The middle of many moss stems is made up of a bundle of much narrower and more slender cells, usually colored and thin-walled in transverse section, known as the 'central strand'. This is usually continuous with the midrib or costa of the leaves, similar to the vascular bundles in the higher plants. Also axial strand.
