(Gr. dis: twice; kotylędon: cavity, hollow) A flowering plant in which the embryo in the seed possesses two seed leaves ( See cotyledons). Dicotyledonous plants generally have broad leaves with networks of veins, and floral parts arranged in multiples of two, four or five. Buttercups and sunflowers are examples. In some classifications the y are now commonly regarded as a class (Magnoliidae) within the phylum Magnoliopsida. Cf. monocotyledon.
