(L. divisio, divisionis: dividing up) A major taxonomic rank within the Plant Kingdom ranking just below kingdom and above class. The division is usually replaced by the phylum in the Animal Kingdom; in the Plant Kingdom the term phylum is no longer generally recognised. Cf. phylum.
