(Gr. endêmos: native) A plant that is native to a particular, specific country or region or geographic area or edaphic type; not introduced or naturalized. Describing a plant or animal species that is restricted to one or a few localities in its distribution. Endemic species are usually confined to islands and are vulnerable to extinction. Describing a disease or a pest that is always present in an area. For example, malaria is endemic in parts of Africa.
