(Gr. ypo: under; gê: earth) Describing seed germination in which the seed leaves (cotyledons) remain below ground. Examples of hypogeal germination are seen in oak and runner bean. Cf. epigeal. Describing fruiting bodies that develop underground, such as truffles and peanuts. Syn. hypogaeal, hypogaeous, hypogeous.
