(Gr. ypo: under; gynę: female) Situated on the receptacle beneath the ovary and free from it and from the calyx; having the petals and stamens so situated; inserted below the gynoecium, and not adherent; immediately below thew oogonium; the ovary thus said to be superior. Cf. perigynous, epigynous.
