(Gr. meros: part; karpos: fruit) One segment of a fruit that breaks at maturity into units derived from the individual carpels. Cf. schizocarp. Syn. hemicarp. One of the two carpels that resembles achenes and forms the schizocarp of an umbelliferous plant.
