(L. pistillum: pestle) The part of a flower consisting of the female reproductive organs. It consists of one or more carpels (ovary, stigma, and style when present), which may be united into a single structure. Some plants, such as the cucumber, have separate male and female flowers: the latter are described as pistillate. Cf. gynoecium.
