pome

noun

(L. pomum: fruit[with pit or pip]) A type of fleshy, indehiscent (false) fruit represented by the apple, pear and related genera, resulting from a compound inferior ovary, in which the receptacle or hypanthium has enlarged to enclose the true fruit. The flesh of the fruit develops from the receptacle of the flower, which completely encloses the fused carpels. After fertilization the carpels form the `core` of the fruit, which contains the seeds. The characteristic fruit of the apple family, as the apple, the pear, the quince, etc. See also pseudocarp.
