(Gr. pro: before; anêr, andros: male) Having the male sex organs of a flower (stamens) maturing before the female ones (carpels) thereby ensuring that self-fertilization does not occur; of a flower, shedding the pollen before the stigma is receptive; in bryophytes, applied to monoicous bryophytes that mature and release spermatids prior to the maturation of the archegonia on the same plant.
