(Gr. prôtos: first; gynê: woman) Having the female sex organs maturing before the male; of a flower, shedding the pollen after the stigma has ceased to be receptive; applied to monoicous bryophytes that produce mature archegonia before maturation and release of spermatids on the same plant.
