spawning aggregation

A group of conspecific fish gathered for the purpose of spawning, with fish densities or numbers significantly higher than those found in the area of aggregation during the non-reproductive periods. Resident spawning aggregations draw individuals from a relatively small and local area, wheras in transient spawning aggregations individuals must travel days or weeks to reach the aggregation site.
