Pigment production in your iris does not occur, and when light reflects off the rounded surface of your eye, they appear blue. Genes that limit the cat’s coloration result in blue eyes. Pointy cats, like Siamese cats, which have lighter bodies and darker limbs, always have blue eyes.

Cats with the dominant white gene can sometimes, but not always, have blue eyes.

The Balinese is a modern pointy cat breed with deep blue eyes. The long fur of these beautiful felines arose due to a spontaneous genetic mutation in purebred Siamese cats.

These medium cats are not just pretty faces. Known for being intelligent, curious, playful, and loving, Balinese can make excellent family pets.

Although there is no genuinely hypoallergenic cat breed, because they do not have an undercoat and are minimally excreted, Balinese may not trigger allergic reactions like some cats will.

Balis is not suitable for being left alone too often. They love company, and if they don’t get enough attention, they can be pretty expressive in letting you know about it.

Birman Cat

The exact history of the species is unknown, but it is believed that they arose after cats imported from Burma were raised with Siamese cats in France.

It is no surprise that the Birman is a prevalent breed. They are sweet, playful, and loving. Although still a vocal breed, their meows are not as loud as their Balinese and Siamese relatives.

Himalayas Cat

The spiky Himalayas were created by crossing Siamese and Persian cats. Not all organizations recognize that the breed is separate from the Persian. Their eyes are always a deep blue, and their fur, which comes in various shades, is long and dense.

Hammies tend to be incredibly affectionate and playful. However, they can create mischief if they don’t get enough enrichment and attention. This breed also has a high-maintenance grooming regimen. Himmies’ thick double coats can become tangled and uncomfortable if not brushed daily.

  • Length: About 18 inches
  • Physical Characteristics: Medium to large with a broad chest, round abdomen, and muscular build; they can often look bigger than they are; coats come in cream, grey, blue, and chocolate with pointy markings.

Blue Eyes

Blue eyes Cat

This modern and scarce breed of cat was accepted for registration by the TICA in 1991. However, their numbers are still meagre, and the breed standard is still under development. So we had to include them on the list, as their eyes always have an intense blue hue, despite not having a pointed or solid white colour.

They have produced litters with various markings, and they have perhaps the most bottomless blue eyes seen in any breed of cat.

Description of the breed

  • Height: The breed standard is still under development.
  • Weight: 7 to 12 pounds
  • Physical Characteristics: Generally short-layered and in a wide variety of colours except for white, although white patches are acceptable

Persian Cat

With their soft, silky coats, sophisticated faces, and sweet personalities, Persians are one of the world’s most popular and recognizable breeds. White Persians can have blue eyes.

Persians are known to be undemanding, calm, and loving. They often don’t like anything better than snuggling into their owner’s lap for a bit of affection. This breed is not famous for its intelligence, and it won’t be as trainable as the pointy breeds on this list.

Description of the breed

  • Weight: 7 to 12 pounds
  • Length: 14 to 18 inches
  • Physical Characteristics: Sturdy, of medium size, built with a “squashed” face and round, lively eyes; Long silky coats that come in solid, bi-color, brindle, calico, and other variations and patterns.

Ragdoll Cat

They can be larger breeds, but you generally won’t find a more laid-back cat than the Ragdoll. Their name even refers to the fact that they often go limp with pleasure when you pick them up, like a flexible rag doll!

You can’t stop being sucked into by these cats with personalities and big blue eyes. Their friendly and intelligent nature is often compared to that of dogs. It is not unusual for Ragdolls to perform tricks for treats. Lots of company during the day and lots of enrichment at home will go a long way in preventing these energetic and social cats from getting bored.

Description of the breed

  • Height: 9 to 11 inches
  • Weight: 8 to 20 pounds
  • Physical characteristics: Large coat with medium hair and blue eyes. Spiky colouration may vary.

Siamese Cat

The instantly recognizable famous Siamese has captivated cat lovers worldwide for decades. Is this a surprise with his striking blue, almond-shaped eyes, pointy colouration, graceful physique, and outgoing nature?

Meezers, as they are affectionately known, are super bright and highly curious. Leaving this breed alone for hours without additional stimulation could cause them to become depressed and destructive.

Siamese cats thrive on being the centre of attention, and they aren’t afraid to tell you when they want more cuddles. They don’t like to be ignored with a wide range of vocalizations and a loud meow.

Description of the breed

  • Height: 8 to 10 inches
  • Weight: 8 to 10 pounds
  • Physical Characteristics: Elegant body, almond-shaped blue eyes, large ears, and wedge-shaped head

Snowshoe cat

Snowshoe cat

The snowshoe was created by crossing Siamese cats with the American shorthair.

These curious parkers want to join in on everything and love to be the centre of attention. Intelligent, vocal, and easily bored, snowshoes will be suitable to join a house where they will have a lot of company and a lot of enrichment.

Description of the breed

  • Height: 8 to 10 inches
  • Weight: 7 to 12 pounds
  • Physical Characteristics: Light body with darker ‘spots’ on ears, mask, legs, and tails; usually a white chest, legs, and parts of the face, with blue or sabres points; short to medium-short hair length

As you may have gathered, most blue-eyed cat breeds have a spiky colouration. Many of these cats are related to the beautiful blue-eyed Siamese.

These cats are usually intelligent, affectionate, and playful. However, they can also be quite loud and need a lot of attention and enrichment for problem behaviours that arise from stress or boredom.
