To get your dog to relieve himself on the street, you must educate him for it since he is a puppy. The key to success is to combine patience and positive education.

How to teach your puppy to relieve himself outside the home

Questions related to the hygienic habits of puppies are possibly the most frequent in the first visits to the vet. However, owners are very concerned that their dog will not learn to relieve himself outside the home. For a dog to know how to differentiate where it can or cannot do it, it must be taught early.

The so-called socialization period ranges from 21 days to 4 months, which is the right time to teach our puppy to determine where to make his bowel movements. At this stage, dogs learn quickly and naturally and set guidelines for performance that will last in time.

Create a limited area at home for the puppy

When the puppy comes home, it is helpful to create a limited area for them ( puppy park ) where to locate a comfortable bed, a drinking fountain and a feeder, their favorite toys, and a place to relieve themselves; the latter as distant as possible from the above, marked with newspaper or soaps.

The park has several objectives. First, since it is a safe area where the puppy will not break things, it will learn to relax playing with its chew toys and relieve itself in the soaker. If the dog has access to the whole house, we increase the probability of getting relief in the wrong place.

By observing your routines, we will quickly know when you are most likely to urinate and anticipate your needs by placing you in the park before it happens.

Timing is the key to teaching your puppy to be clean at home. What’s more, the effectiveness of learning depends entirely on the owner’s ability to predict when he needs to evacuate so that he can take him to the assigned area. And reward him for relieving himself in the right place, at the right time.

Educate the puppy positive when he does his business

Even creating a puppy park and anticipating his needs, sometimes the dog will pee or poop in the wrong place, but no matter what happens, we should never scold him. Because this will not make him learn faster, on the contrary, it could hinder the process. So, for example, the dog can come to associate that if he urinates in front of us, he will receive a punishment.

When we see the dog make a stool in the right place, reward the action with a delicious canine treat and an affectionate gesture or word. On the other hand, if he does it in an inappropriate area, we should clean it, if possible, without him seeing us, and not repress him. The puppy will quickly associate that he will receive a positive stimulus if he does his business in the soaker. However, if he does it in an inappropriate place, the owner will not respond.

The best treats for them are dog biscuits or small pieces of sausage. Whenever we reward, we must accompany it with a loving word that reinforces it. So reward him handsomely with a “cool good” as you feed him his favorite food, and he’ll quickly learn how to trade sausage bits for urinating in the right place.

The goal of reinforcing the food treat with a soft touch or word is to substitute food for just the word shortly. The dog is as satisfying the pleasure as our attention. In this way, you will use the food prizes to reward the different actions you want to set in their learning process.

On the other hand, for a prize to have a value, it must be given with reason, that is, if we offer pieces of sausage to the dog indiscriminately all day, giving them because they have peed in the newspaper will have no effect. For this reason, when we are teaching something, we can only provide the reward after the act is carried out, and never without its presence will lose the cause-effect relationship.
