Carp fish is an animal that many people know, but its care, origins, characteristics, and other aspects are, in most cases, unknown. These fish have their source in Asia and Europe, about 2000 years ago.

Carp Fish characteristics

There have been many researchers and experts who assure the presence of this type of fish in the Tigris River and the Danube.

As explained, it would be a very rudimentary animal that would have been raised in large Roman ponds. Many people today know it by its scientific name: Cyprinus carpio. In addition, it is sometimes confused and difficult to identify since it can present multiple ornamental characteristics and a variety of colors.

In addition, these fish are one of the species with the most extraordinary capacity for adaptation. Aesthetically, they have an elongated shape and are generally characterized by their grayish and greenish-yellow color in the belly area, although this changes depending on the type and quality of the water.

In the same way, its body is solid, elongated, and robust, in addition to being covered by large shiny scales. These can vary, as before, depending on the type of water where they are located.

Other physical characteristics that define these fish are:

  • Its closed spine.
  • The elongated and thin shape of its scales.
  • The mouth projected out with sensors on both sides.

Generally, these animals do not have significant weight because they are not of great size or magnitude. Typically their weight is between five and eight kilos during the most mature or adult stage, with males being heavier and larger than females. Regarding their size, these fish are approximately 60 to 80 centimeters long, the males being more significant than the females, as in the previous case.

On the other hand, this animal is usually found in stagnant waters in Asia and Europe. As previously mentioned, it is a resistant spice and adapts to different water temperatures, except those that are cold, typical of the polar areas. However, they prefer slightly warm waters to live in.

In addition, these fish can be found in aquariums or a fish tank as they support low oxygen levels. As for its diet, it is mainly omnivorous. That is to say. It is based on aquatic plants and, in turn, is complemented by insects, crustaceans, or zooplankton located at the bottom of the rivers and lakes they inhabit.

If the carp fish is bred in captivity, other foods such as worms, vegetables, or algae can be added to the diet. These are just some of its care and characteristics that define it, but how does the reproduction and breeding of these animals take place?

Carp Fish Breeding and Reproduction

Carp fish have a powerful ability to adapt to various environments, as explained above. Even so, for them to have a good quality of life in the ponds where they live and not develop stress or threaten their habitat or other animals with which they share space or fish tank, the following aspects must be put into practice:

  • Have large ponds or aquariums.
  • Ambient and consider the decoration by plants or other elements that simulate their habitat.
  • Put rocks in the bottom well organized to obstruct your step.

Regarding the reproduction of carp fish, it is also necessary to consider various knowledge to provide the care required in the process subsequently. For example, this fish reaches sexual maturity around three or four years of life.

In this way, the female lays her eggs in shallow waters characterized by abundant vegetation. Later, the male fertilizes them externally, leaving the eggs attached to the vegetal layer until they finally hatch after spending about three days, depending on the temperature at which the water is.

On the other hand, it is essential to bear in mind that being resistant animals and not requiring too much care, in general, they will be very healthy species, and they will rarely be involved in a disease.

They can even suffer attacks from fungi or viruses that enter their habitats. They can also be expected to contract diseases such as infectious nephritis, ichthyoporidiosis, and furunculosis, among others.

To prevent them, it is essential to constantly take care of the water and obtain it in places that guarantee its quality and safety if it is to be consumed. But the question is, can this animal be eaten then?

Other Interesting Aspects

Carp fish never cease to amaze, and although their name has rarely been heard in a fish shop or seen in a fish tank, their consumption is more common than you might think.

In addition, other aspects make this fish characteristic:

  • It is the central part of a traditional Christmas dish in the Czech Republic.
  • It is part of the long list of the 100 most harmful species globally. This is because it is capable of exterminating ecosystems.
  • It is easy to be captured at any time, with any technique.

In short, this animal has a much greater potential than many people think. Today, it can be found in many places in the world, and at the same time, it can be raised and used as a way of eating, since, as explained, its consumption is positive for health.
