Why not have a pet fish? It is true that when it comes to thinking about a companion animal, dogs and cats come to mind, and the most original think of ferrets or rabbits. You can play with them and take them outside with fish, but obviously not. They are installed in the aquarium, and from there, they cannot leave, and the only thing we can do is watch and take care of them by cleaning their cabin.
However, we must remember that if we have never had a pet, fish is an excellent suggestion to start with and gain responsibility and have a human being who depends on us. For this reason, they are very suitable for children who want to have a pet.
Why Keep Fish as a Pet?
It should also be considered that they hardly take up space, depending on how big or small the aquarium is. Their care is limited to feeding them daily, changing the water, and cleaning the aquarium from time to time. Nor is it a pet that requires a significant financial outlay, and they will not give us problems with the neighbors because they do not generate noise.
In addition, to have a fish as a pet, there is little to know about them, and any questions can be resolved at the pet store. You have to know, of course, that not all fish can be kept in an aquarium at home and that there are certain species that, due to their needs and conditions, cannot live in the same space as others.
Finally, it must be borne in mind that a well-decorated aquarium with striking fish can be an essential decorative element in a house. It is eye-catching and also generates calm among those around it.
Aquarium OR Fish Tank?
It is essential to know where they will live when having fish. An aquarium is large and majestic, but a fish tank is more practical if we have never had fish. Thus we will adapt to their care on a small scale, and later we can leap the aquarium. Also, we may need to use both spaces because not all fish can live in the same aquarium.
Some species attack each other, so living in the same aquarium is not easy. In addition, some are from cold climates, and others come from warm ones, which is why they need a different temperature of the water, and their coexistence is incompatible. However, it can also be achieved that a particular species molds itself to a temperature that is not it’s own with time. This is the case of spike fish or killifish.
Depending on the size of the species, some cannot be in a small fish tank, but some cannot coexist with others. For this reason, you can either set up your own differentiated spaces within the aquarium or place them in a different one.
What Fish should not have an Aquarium?
Although they all seem the same at first glance, you cannot have all kinds of fish in an aquarium. The combination of fish can cause real headaches because some species cannot coexist with others. In addition, and given the surface in the case of large aquariums, the ideal is to mix fish that swim on the bottom with those that float on the surface and, incidentally, take the opportunity to introduce some of the cleaning species, which in turn if they will help keep the fish tank in better condition.
The first thing to distinguish is freshwater fish and saltwater fish. The first are the ones that we usually find in aquariums. Those of saltwater are not generally in fish tanks because specific conditions have to be created. They are, however, the most attractive from an aesthetic point of view.
Among the most colorful saltwater fish, we find the clownfish – the same one that stars in the movie Finding Nemo, the dragonfish, the surgeonfish, the batfish, or the mullet. These species live in the sea, on a large surface of water through which they can swim freely, so they do not always get used to being in small habitats.
These fish end up dying if they are introduced into an aquarium due to the high concentration of chemicals in one of the most common fish tanks. To have this kind of pet, a unique aquarium must be set up in which the alkalinity of the water and the salinity balances are controlled and maintained.
Most saltwater fish need a pH between 8.2 and 8.4, so you have to work so that it never drops below 8. Likewise, the space has to be conditioned with sand and stones brought from the beach instead of those sold in establishments because they are more typical of an environment these fish are used to.
